TRADITIONAL UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS Ukrainian Christmas festivities begin on Christmas Eve and end on the Feast of Epiphany. The Christmas Eve Supper or Sviata Vecheria (Holy Supper) brings the family together to partake in special foods and begin the holiday with many customs and traditions. The rituals of Christmas Eve are dedicated to God, to the welfare of the family and to the remembrance of the ancestors. There are twelve courses in the Supper, symbolic of the Twelve Apostles. The courses are meatless because there is a period of fasting required by the Church until Christmas Day. The table is covered with an embroidered tablecloth and under the table some hay is spread to remind us that Christ was born in a manger. The table always has one extra place-setting for the deceased family members, whose souls, according to belief, come on Christmas Eve and partake of the food. With the appearance of the first star which is believed to be the Star of Bethlehem and symbolizes the trek of the Three Wise Men, the family gathers to begin supper. The Food comes from various parts of nature (the whole creation is here to welcome Jesus): From the field — wheat, rice From the garden — beets, beans, cabbage From the orchard — dried fruit From the water — fish From the forest — mushrooms, nuts Typical food for a Holy Supper: Kutia — wheat, nuts, poppy seed, raisins, Borsch - traditional beer soup Pyrohy — with potatoes, cabbage, prunes Beans, Fish, Mushrooms Dried Fruit Compote, Pampushky Cabbage Rolls (Holubsti) — with rice, buckwheat Explanation of various articles on the table: Kolach (braided bread) — Christ is the Bread of Life Candle — star of Bethlehem Tablecloth — the swaddling clothes in which Jesus was wrapped. Straw (placed under the tablecloth) straw in the manger. ️If you wish to offer a GIFT OF LOVE TO THE CLERGY/BISHOP this Christmas, please use the envelope in your boxed set or a convenient envelope (please indicate “Gift of Love”).
